The aging of the baby boomers poses challenges to our public policies that we have only begun to confront. Medicare and Social Security are the two largest social policy expenditures, and their share of the budget is projected only to increase with the retirement of the baby boomers. The problems this poses are particularly acute at a time of rampant deficits, and a post-industrial economy that demands increased attention to the human capital formation of the young. This project seeks to understand how we should adapt our health care, retirement security, employment policies, and budgeting to a growing aging population. More broadly, we seek to confront these questions without raising the specter of generational warfare, and instead offer new approaches that will allow us to meet our obligations to young and old alike.
