Economic Security
American workers are faced with unparalleled levels of economic insecurity in today’s highly volatile global market. Existing government programs are ill suited to provide the support that working American families need today. With the Economic Security Project, New Vision aims to establish an empirically grounded understanding of how Americans’ economic security has shifted over time, and to sort out the various causes and consequences of this shift. Armed with a sound understanding of the landscape, we seek to offer a set of policies—both specific policy proposals and more general policy frames—for creating a secure footing from which Americans can strive upward. Our approach focuses not only on individual
workers, but also on employers and on society as a whole. For employees,
we aim to provide a safety net that helps cushion their fall when times
are tough, supports their return to the workforce after job displacement,
and creates a set of social insurance policies that can easily be accessed
throughout their careers. For employers, we strive to build a stronger,
more intelligent workforce better-matched to the demands of industry.
And for society as a whole, we believe that support for a flexible workforce
has the potential to generate economic growth, mitigate the cost of
unemployment, and contribute to a dynamic, productive American economic
future. |
